Country pick up gig

The Tale:

About 10 years ago, I got a call from a friend and fellow musician who said he was looking for someone who could fill in on drums that night for a local Country/Western singer (the regular drummer had the flu, or something). I still had my kit, although I hadn't played drums in several years (I'm primarily a guitar & bass player), and the pay was $75/no rehearsal. Even though I loathe C/W music, I needed the money and agreed to do the gig. Things went pretty well, considering I had never even heard 90% of the material, until the first slow tune came around. The singer turned to me and said, "okay, this one is a slow, country ballad", then turned to the audience, announced the tune, and began to sing and play his accoustic guitar. I, like the other musicians, came in almost immediately. I thought the tune felt a little strange, had a lot of words and, frankly, I wasn't paying too much attention (C/W can be so boring, especially on drums). Anyway, we did the first verse and chorus, then the second verse and chorus. Then it was time for the solo, which was the first opportunity for the singer to back away from the mic, at which point he turned to me and screamed, "THREE-FOUR!!!" No wonder it felt strange... I had been playing a straight 4/4 beat the whole time. That was the last C/W gig I did.
