The Water-bone
The Tale:
Backstage at a concert recently, me and the other trumpet players decided to play a time-honoured trick on the bass trombonist. We'd already tuned up and where just about to go on, and Bob the trombonist had left his instrument on the side while he went off to get his mute. We quickly fetched a jar of water, took off the slide, and decanted a few pints down the tubes! We knew that when he tried to play his first note, he'd get nothing at all, swiftly followed by a torrent of water. We trumpeters creased up laughing, and fortunately (I suppose!) Bob realised something was up, and tipped the water out before he could make a monkey of himself. Lucky him!
