Thoughts:
Yep, it's true, we must not adopt technology because we are infatuated with it. We must recognize the potential losses and gains and how to realize the gains without important losses. Generally this takes time. My (published) definition of technology: Technology is a non-decreasing mass of ideas and information that grows almost exclusively from the combination and refinement of elements of itself.
So, regarding the internet and education, we need more refinement and combination of existing technology.
