Judgement of Thamus

Thoughts:

After reading Technopoly and thinking about it for several years, I think the opening section about Thamus's judgment is an excellent beginning.

After going throught Amusing Ourselves, it is clear that Postman backed up to justify in some way the real loss that writing renders upon society. In discussing how people will think themselves wise without really knowing is such an excellent idea; one that we find so true. When you watch the "talking heads" on TV each night tell you about the world without really knowing or caring much of what they are telling you about, you know Thamus was right.

Like many of Postman's ideas, this one just poses the problem, but does not get at any solution. A current bestseller, Men are from Mars Women are from Venus, is also good at helping people understand the cause of many problems. Real education comes when one knows both sides of a problem and can look it and realize how people can take diametrically opposite views of an issue that faces every human. Certainly, for someone interested in ideas, Thamus was right on. But for those in marketing or advertizing, Thamus probably is an irritant.

After raeding and thinking of Technopoly for several years, I finally agree with Thamus. He was right on!
